Making A Traditional Pasta Sish

One of the most fabulously tasty Italian dishes is pasta a la puttanesca. The story behind the name is quite interesting and it is derived from the Italian word for prostitute. It is believed that this easy and quick to make dish was a natural go to for Italian prostitutes to cook up in between servicing their clients. It wouldn’t have done much for their attractiveness though, as the dish contains a lot of garlic and anchovies, not exactly conducive to having nice fresh breath!

This pasta is dead easy to make and it is also very healthy, cheap and so quick. You can make your own take on this dish, not everyone likes anchovies, for example, but they add a great kick to it.

  • Chopped large or cherry tomatoes
  • Lots of garlic
  • Half a diced onion
  • Pitted black olives
  • A couple of anchovies
  • A small handful of capers
  • Chili if you want to give it a bit more oomph
  • A pinch of salt and pepper

Literally throw everything into a pan and let it cook down for a few minutes until the tomatoes start to soften ever so slightly. Do not let the tomatoes overcook as they will just become a sloppy mess. Some people like to add a dash of white wine, while others just like to put a quarter of a cup of water into the mix. Once the tomatoes are ready, it is time to take the pan off the flame. You should have timed your pasta to be ready at the same time as the sauce.

Do not put the pasta on a plate and dump the sauce on top. That is not the way to eat pasta. Mix the sauce into the strained pasta and put it on heat while you do so for a minute or so. Dish up, add a drizzle of olive oil and tuck into your delicious meal.
